Summary

He discovered two orders in Indian bryoflora, viz. Calobryales in Hepaticeae and Buxbaumiales in mosses; and described a number of taxa new to science and several new records for the country. He worked on Jungermannials – a group which had not been investigated adequately earlier. With regard to Indian liverworts, he pioneered the study of oilbodies which form one of the most important characters in the systematics of foliose liverworts. He also wrote the books An Introduction to Bryophyta and Bryology in India. Ram Udar received PhD (1959) from University of Lucknow. He became Professor of Botany at the University of Lucknow.

Other Contributions: Ram Udar established a strong school of bryology in the University of Lucknow. He was Life Member of Indian Botanical Society and Palaeobotanical Society (sometime Vice President); and Member, American Bryological and Lichenological Society, British Bryological and Lichenological Society.
